Det var väl knappast i syfte att spränga berg man tog med sig kassettbandspelaren på semestern, och det var väl heller inte genomförbart rent tekniskt. En oväntat negativ konsekvens i denna högteknologiska utvecklingscentrifug är emellertid att de som tillverkar batterierna inte får sälja alls så många batterier som förut. Och eftersom framgång utan tillväxt är tillbakagång, och tillväxt utan försäljningsökning är missväxt, behöver problemet pucklas på med konsumenten som sandsäck. I fallet med batterierna har man kanske sneglat på tillverkare av dammsugarpåsar som uppenbarligen stått inför liknande utmaningar. Lösningen består i att man breddar produktutbudet till total oöverskådlighet och lanserar alldeles för många modeller av nästan identiska produkter och sedan säljer dem förpackade i alldeles för stor mängd. På så vis dubblas försäljningen minst en gång när alla köper fel modell, sedan fyrdubblas försäljningen genom tvånget att köpa fyra så många batterier som man behöver, vilket i praktiken ger en åttafaldig försäljningsökning eftersom man måste köpa fyra batterier av både fel och rätt modell. Och eftersom apparaterna klarar sig på ett enda batteri tillräckligt länge för att de överflödiga batterierna ska hinna tappas bort så räcker intäkterna till att fortsätta utveckla nya onödiga modeller och klaveret är därmed självspelande. Utan batterier.

Framför den vidsträckta exponering av batterier jag nu beskådar i stormarknadspalatset får jag omedelbart huvudvärk och blir kissnödig. I min nyligen inledda, och snarligen upphörande, bojkott kommer jag endast att använda apparater som drivs av vägg eller vev.
